FAITH IN THE FRAME

Welcome to the very first issue of Plumb News, a weekly dispatch where film and faith share the same frame. Our hope is to use this newsletter to build a community of believers who love genre movies — such as sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and thriller — but don’t want stories that compromise their values. Here, you’ll find spotlighted filmmakers, buried gems worth revisiting, and reflections on why these stories matter.

This week, we’re exploring what happens when fear takes shape. Some stories turn grief into monsters. Others turn legends into questions of belief. All of them remind us that the darkness isn’t just empty, it’s a place of testing. And in those moments, we’re left with the same challenge: will fear freeze us in place, or will faith carry us forward?

SKETCH (2024)

A fantasy adventure with horror-lite edges, Sketch follows the story of a young girl who processes her grief through drawings that unexpectedly come to life. What could have been just another monster movie is instead a meditation on loss, healing, and love that holds a family together. Free of gore or profanity, it leans into meaning over menace. Made with integrity and faith-filled care, the film stands out as a thoughtful, values-aligned genre story.

FEET OF DEATH (2024)

This indie creature feature reframes the Bigfoot myth with sincerity — choosing grief, belief, and mystery over monsters and gore. As a directorial debut with limited resources, it delivers suspense with touches of authenticity and levity. Most notable is how it was made: writer-director James Chick led with respect, generosity, and Christian values, a spirit of integrity that carries into the film.

WHY “PLUMB” MATTERS

Every movie asks its audience to make a trade: overlook rough edges for entertainment. Too often, Hollywood pushes stories past conviction — gratuitous language, empty violence, cheap vulgarity. On the other hand, faith films rein things in so much they exclude entire genres, as if suspense, sci-fi, or horror can’t be redeemed.

Plumb exists to stand in the middle. To say: “Yes, we want movies that thrill, unsettle, and provoke thought, but not at the cost of our values.” A “Plumb” story points to the True Vertical, not by preaching, but by digging deep into what’s honest, excellent, and resonant.

We believe that genre is the whole language of culture. Monsters can become metaphors. Time travel can spark theological questions. Family dramas can show grace under pressure. These stories matter because they don’t shy away from the shadows; they reveal the power of illuminating them with light.

That’s why we’re here — not just to consume films, but to curate, champion, and create the kind of stories that keep us entertained and aligned. Movies that are exciting, imaginative, even edgy, but still anchored to conviction. That’s Plumb.

IF THE LIGHT GOES OUT

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” - Psalm 23:4

There’s something primal about losing light.

Whether it’s the final flicker of a candle in a haunted house or the creeping fade of spiritual clarity during hard times, darkness has always terrified us. Not just because we can’t see, but because we can’t know. Our mind rushes to fill the unknown with monsters.

But what if the monster isn’t the problem?

What if the real test is: Will we keep walking anyway?

In horror films, the protagonist almost always has a moment where everything breaks. The flashlight dies. The radio goes static. The trail runs cold. That’s when they have a choice: freeze, flee… or go forward in faith.

As Christians, we’re called into the darkness, not because we enjoy it, but because we believe there’s light beyond it. Not every valley is a punishment. Some are passages. Some terrors are tunnels to something holy.

So this week, whether you’re facing career fear, family fractures, or just the Sunday night pit in your stomach, we invite you to stand in the dark a little longer. Not alone, but knowing the Director is still behind the camera… and the story’s not over yet.

Until next time,
